Self-awareness is key to successful leadership

As a leader, it's important to know yourself first, or to be self-aware, before you can lead others effectively. Understanding your strengths, weaknesses, and personality traits can help you lead with intention and make better decisions for yourself and your team. In this blog post, I’ll explore why self-awareness is crucial for leadership and provide three actionable tips. As Socrates said, ‘Know thyself’.

  1. Self-awareness leads to better decision-making: Self-awareness is the ability to recognize your own thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. By understanding your own tendencies, you can make better decisions that align with your values and goals. When faced with a difficult decision, take a moment to reflect on your own biases and motivations. By doing so, you can make a more informed decision that takes into account both your own needs and those of your team. I recommend using your breath as a guide before you make any big decision. Take a moment, see if you are holding your breath, release that breath, and then proceed.

Self-awareness fosters empathy: Empathy is the ability to understand the feelings of others - it’s often thrown around as a term, but it’s important to note that this is about stepping outside yourself and seeing a different point of view. It requires that you detach from your conviction at the moment and focus on understanding. When you know yourself well, you can better understand the perspectives of others. This can help you communicate more effectively with your team and build stronger relationships. Take the time to reflect on your own emotions and how they affect your interactions with others. This can help you develop greater empathy and better understand the needs of your team. I recommend pausing for a beat or two so that you can allow the other perspective to flow in and release your energetic hold on your specific point of view.

  3. Self-awareness improves performance: By understanding your own strengths and weaknesses, you can make better use of your skills and work to improve areas where you may be lacking. This can lead to improved performance and greater success as a leader. To improve your self-awareness, consider taking an assessment or working with a coach. These tools can help you gain a better understanding of your personality traits and work style, as well as provide actionable feedback for improvement.
